Akon on Defending Tekashi, T-Pain Never Leaving the Hood, Not Signing Drake, Eminem (Full Interview)
Akon came through for another VladTV interview, and this time around, he went more in-depth on his story, including growing up in both the U.S. and Senegal. A clip from the start of the conversation went viral after Akon stated that he feels like Black people in America hold themselves back in some ways by focusing on slavery. He also spoke about living in St. Louis, which he called the "ghetto-est" place he's ever seen, and Akon then detailed an elaborate $700,000 a month car theft ring that he was running, which landed him in jail for 3 years. Moving along, Akon spoke about getting a mere $12,000 for his first deal with SRC Records, and he then got into a debate with Vlad about doing "Locked Up 2" with Tekashi. He also addressed signing various artists himself, including Lady Gaga, Jeffree Star, and T-Pain, who Akon says was held back in his career because he never left the urban sector.
